The period when a child enters their teenage years is very difficult for the whole family. The need to express individuality, a greater desire to voice one's opinion, and the absolute necessity of personal space – these are issues that become a priority for a teenager. However, they can cause some concern for parents, as a teenager often spends more time alone or with friends, confined to their own space.
If you know this from experience, you have no reason to stress – this is what growing up looks like, and you should do everything to fulfill at least some of the young rebel's needs. It's worth starting by respecting their privacy, and consequently, ensuring a place where they feel safe and secure. So, how do you arrange a space when a child becomes a teenager?
Consider the teenager's needs and interests
When furnishing a teenager's room, you should primarily take their opinion into account. It would be good if you could have a detailed conversation with your child about what they expect, as well as their current interests. We probably don't need to mention that a child's worldview can completely change with age, and they may discover new hobbies, which is why such a conversation is very important. It's also worth considering other aspects, which you'll find below.
- Dividing the space into appropriate zones is extremely important, as children's rooms usually have limited area, and therefore – arranging such a room functionally using youth furniture is the key to success. In the study corner, place a modern desk (e.g., Lotta Grey); if you've decided on minimalism, but if you need storage space, it's worth choosing one with several drawers (e.g., Ines Elegant White). You can separate the sleeping area using a bookcase that will look great in combination with other furniture from the same series (e.g., So Sixty, Pinette). In the relaxation zone, where the teenager will host guests, place a small daybed, and on the chest of drawers (Bellamy) - a TV and console.
- Ensure plenty of storage space, as teenagers are very often prone to clutter. With enough cabinets or a large, spacious wardrobe, it will be easier for them to maintain order.
- A great way to save space is multi-functional or modular furniture, which works perfectly in smaller rooms. Solid, wooden chests can serve as seating and storage space at the same time, and a pull-out bed for a child in their teenage years can also double as a daybed or sofa.
- Let the child decorate the room according to their individual preferences. For every teenager, the free ability to express themselves is important, so provide them with space for trinkets, gadgets from their favorite movies or series, posters, etc. The teenager should also choose carpets, curtains, and decorative throw pillows for the sofa – this will be the safest option.
- Remember to ensure their privacy and respect their boundaries. Provide them with the option of locking cabinets, as well as doors with a key, and if they share a room with siblings – separate their space with a screen, and they will surely show you gratitude in their own way.
